Honestly, I use a lot of tv! For example, do you remember the case years ago where the older lady spilled hot coffee in her lap and sued? As it turns out, we only got one side of the story. The judge put a gag order on this poor lady while allowing the corporation to dominate the media. My students will be reading the stories about the case, then we will watch the documentary, Hot Coffee by HBO. They will have to compare and contrast what they read in the newspapers versus what they see in the documentary. Sometimes, I use songs that they listen to on the radio. They have to print out the lyrics, really READ the lyrics, then analyze the symbolism encoded in them. One song is Wockesha by Money Bagg Yo. Most of my students have heard this song a million times and NEVER heard what the artist is saying. In class, they discovered that the speaker is a functional alcoholic crying out for help.
