Yes, it was horrible. It also shows the deleterious affect of a white gaze on Black psyches. Folks were ashamed of Hurston, because she was "country." Sadly, this is still continuing in the academy and I have experienced it first-hand. I blogged about it. The name of the post is: "How It Feels to be the Embarassing Black Academic." I was hazed by Black academics mercilessly, because I refuse to drop my Mississippi accent. Hurston refused to drop her central Florida accent.
